Wine and cheese are a match made in heaven. It’s also our luck that there are so many types of wines and cheeses to choose from in the market today. However, not every cheese will match the freshness and acidity of just any wine. Thankfully, there are a few classic combinations that will ensure you never make the mistake of pairing the wrong cheese and wine combination. Read to check them out.
1 – Prosecco and Parmesan
Travel to Italy with this amazing combination. While Parmesan is usually a hard cheese to pair because of its pronounced saltiness, the bubbles in Prosecco somehow temper the taste of the cheese-making it one of the best wine and cheese combos out there.
2 – Cabernet Sauvignon and Gouda
Cabernet Sauvignon is a full-bodied wine that is also high in tannins. To cut through them, your best option is a Gouda cheese that is preferably well-aged. Cabernet Sauvignon is known to have fruity flavours such as cherries or plums or blackberries. These go well with the nutty flavour of aged Gouda cheese.
3 – Rioja and Manchego
One of those rare combinations that you try once and wonder where it was all your life. Spanish Rioja wines paired with Manchego cheese is exactly that. Manchego cheeses are on the slightly sweeter side and their hard texture pairs superbly with Rioja wines, especially on a hot summer day.
4 – Riesling and Ricotta
Riesling and Ricotta are a match made in heaven. Because of Ricotta’s wetness, the cheese pairs well with Riesling that is a dry wine in essence. The classic German wine and Ricotta, which some people also use interchangeably with cottage cheese while cooking, is best enjoyed just by itself without any other dishes in view.
5 – Chardonnay and Gruyere
You really can’t go wrong with Chardonnay. The white wine goes well with most dry cheeses but Gruyere is its best friend as it brings out its fruity and nutty flavours. Remember, the fruitier the wine, the better it’ll pair with Gruyere.
6 – Pinot Noir and Brie
Melt-in-your-mouth Brie and a nice young bottle of Pinot Noir are as good as fish and chips together. Because its easy to overpower Brie, the wine needs to be naturally light with a lower ABV in comparison to other wines. Little wonder that Pinot Noir fits the bill perfectly.
7 – Beaujolais and Feta
Feta is one of our most favourite cheeses and while it’s a must-have with Mediterranean food, the wine that pairs best with it is the French Beaujolais. It also works with certain Greek wines but the main criterion is to pair feta with a red wine that cuts away its saltiness and makes a great flavourful combination together.
8 – Pinot Grigio and Mozzarella
Mozzarella is known to pair well with pizza but this slightly sweet cheese is also a perfect companion with Pinot Grigio. A good Mozzarella can cut away Pinot Grigio’s acidity and makes for a perfect couple at any table.
9 – Sauvignon Blanc and Goat Cheese
Goat Cheese’s slightly flavourful taste goes well with Sauvignon Blanc as they complement each other’s acidity to the T, creating an invigorating experience that’s hard to find with many other wine and cheese combinations. Some have even called the pairing GOAT, which is an acronym for Greatest Of All Time. But we’ll let you be the judge of that.
10 – Malbec and Cheddar
Last but definitely not the least, this is your emergency saviour since both Malbec and Cheddar are easy to find in stores across India. Cheddar’s distinct taste is balanced perfectly by Malbec’s tannins, so much so that they’re a veritable feast in your mouth. Just try them together once to know what we mean.
